Who Is Transamerica?

Transamerica Medicare Supplement company history timeline from 1904 to 2028

Transamerica is owned by Aegon, an international insurance and investment group that bought it in 1999. In December 2025, Aegon announced plans to move its headquarters to the United States and rename the parent company Transamerica, a change it expects to finish by 2028.

Your Medicare Supplement policy is issued by Transamerica Life Insurance Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In New York, policies come from Transamerica Financial Life Insurance Company.

Parent company. Aegon, which plans to rename itself Transamerica and move its headquarters to the U.S.

Underwriter. Transamerica Life Insurance Company, Cedar Rapids, Iowa (Transamerica Financial Life in New York).

Financial strength. AM Best affirmed an A (Excellent) rating with a stable outlook in February 2026.

The name change at the parent company does not change your policy. Your coverage, benefits and the company that pays your claims stay the same. For most buyers, the more useful facts are the rating, the price in your ZIP code and how the company has handled rate changes over time.

Transamerica Medicare Supplement Plan Letters for 2027

Transamerica sells the standardized Medicare Supplement plan letters, but not every letter is sold in every state. Plan G and Plan N are the two most people compare today.

Plan What You Pay in 2027 Who It Fits
Plan G Only the Part B deductible (projected $292) People who want few surprise bills
Plan N Part B deductible, up to $20 office copays, up to $50 ER copays and Part B excess charges People who want a lower monthly premium
Plan A Part A and Part B deductibles, plus some other gaps People who want basic coverage only
Plan F Nothing for covered care Only people eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020

Availability of each letter varies by state. The 2027 Part B deductible is a Trustees projection; CMS sets the final figure in November.

Broker tip: Many Transamerica plans are priced on issue age in most states, so your premium is based on the age you were when you bought it, not your current age. Rates can still go up for inflation and claims costs.

Transamerica Discounts and Extras

EasyPay discount. Paying by automatic bank draft through EasyPay may save you about 5% on your premium.

Dental, vision and hearing. In some states, optional dental, vision and hearing coverage may be added for an extra premium.

No networks. See any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, with no referrals.

30-day free look. You can return a new policy within 30 days for a refund if you change your mind.

We could not confirm a household discount for Transamerica Medicare Supplement plans, so ask your agent whether one applies in your state. Transamerica plans also do not include a SilverSneakers-type fitness program.

Extras are nice, but your monthly premium matters more over time. A company with no extras and a lower Plan G price is often the better deal. See our guide to Medicare Supplement Plan G costs for 2027 for typical price ranges.

How Transamerica Compares

Transamerica Medicare Supplement pros and cons for 2027

Because every Plan G has the same benefits, comparing Transamerica comes down to price, rate history, service and extras. Here is how its main features line up.

Plan letters Standard letters; varies by state
Pricing method Issue age in most states
Main discount About 5% with EasyPay bank draft

Larger Medicare Supplement sellers such as UnitedHealthcare and Mutual of Omaha may offer household discounts and more online tools. Transamerica can still win on price in some ZIP codes, so it is worth including in your quotes.

Transamerica Pros and Cons

Pro: strong rating. Transamerica Life holds an A (Excellent) rating from AM Best with a stable outlook.

Pro: issue-age pricing. In most states, your rate does not rise just because you get older.

Con: plan choices vary. Not every plan letter is sold in every state.

Good to know: Published reviews list very different state counts for Transamerica. Always confirm that Transamerica is open to new applicants in your ZIP code before you count on it.

How to Buy a Transamerica Medicare Supplement Plan

1

Time it right. Apply during your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which starts when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B. Health questions can’t be used against you then.

2

Pick a plan letter. Compare Plan G and Plan N first. Our Plan G vs Plan N guide explains the difference.

3

Get side-by-side quotes. Compare Transamerica with other companies for the same plan letter in your ZIP code.

4

Ask about discounts and extras. Ask about EasyPay savings and whether dental, vision and hearing add-ons are offered in your state.

5

Apply with a licensed agent. An agent can submit the application and help with health questions at no extra cost to you.

If you are past your open enrollment window, Transamerica may ask health questions before it approves you. Answer them honestly, because a wrong answer can cause problems with a claim later. If you are switching from another Medicare Supplement plan, keep your old policy until the new one is approved and in force, so you never have a gap in coverage.

Also remember that a Medicare Supplement plan does not cover prescription drugs. Most people pair it with a separate Part D plan. Review your choices each fall during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, when you can change Part D plans.

Bottom Line

Transamerica is a well-known, A-rated company with issue-age pricing in most states and an EasyPay discount. Plan letters and extras vary by state, and you will need an agent to see rates. Include it in your 2027 quotes and compare it against other top companies in your ZIP code.
