Why Plan G rates go up in 2027: claims costs, age, a maturing pool and company rate filings

Why Plan G Rates Go Up

Four things drive most Plan G increases:

  • Claims costs. Medical prices and how much members use care keep climbing, and premiums follow.
  • Your age. On an attained-age policy, your premium also rises as you get older.
  • A maturing pool. Once Plan F closed to new enrollees in 2020, Plan G became the main plan for new buyers. As those blocks of business age, claims rise.
  • The company. Each insurer files its own increases with each state, so two companies can raise the same Plan G by very different amounts.

Your benefits never change when the price does. Plan G pays the same standardized benefits no matter what you pay for it.

What to Expect for 2027

THE 2026 BENCHMARK

Plan G rate increases averaged 16.8% in 2026, according to Telos Actuarial. The national average Plan G premium was about $180 a month for a 65-year-old woman who doesn’t smoke, according to ValuePenguin.

Insurers file 2027 increases state by state, and most notify you before your increase takes effect, often on your policy anniversary. With claims costs still rising, another round of increases is likely, but the size will depend heavily on your company and state.

How Pricing Method Affects Your Increases

Pricing Method How It Works What It Means for Increases
Attained-age Based on your current age Rises with age and with costs
Issue-age Based on your age when you bought it Rises with costs, not with age
Community-rated Same price for everyone in the area Rises with costs, not with age

Most policies sold today are attained-age, which is why many people see their premium climb faster after 70. A few states require community-rated or issue-age pricing.

What to do about a Plan G rate increase in 2027: shop the same plan, check state rules, consider Plan N or High Deductible Plan G

What to Do About a Plan G Rate Increase

1. Shop the same plan. Plan G is Plan G with every company. Another insurer may charge noticeably less for identical coverage. Compare carriers such as UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Humana.

2. Check your state’s switching rules. Some states have yearly windows that let you change Medigap plans without health questions, and New York and Connecticut allow switching year-round. Everywhere else, the new company can usually ask health questions.

3. Consider Plan N. It usually costs less in exchange for small copays. See our Plan G vs Plan N 2027 comparison.

4. Look at High Deductible Plan G. It has the lowest premium of the three, with a $3,050 deductible for 2027. See our High Deductible Plan G 2027 guide.

Don’t cancel your current policy until a new one is approved and in force, so you’re never left without coverage.

Before You Switch: 2027 Checklist

  1. Read your rate letter. Note the new premium and the date it takes effect.
  2. Get quotes for the same plan. Compare Plan G from several companies.
  3. Ask about pricing method and rate history. A low price that rises fast isn’t a deal.
  4. Check your state’s switching rules. You may be able to skip health questions.
  5. Keep your old policy until the new one starts. Never leave a gap in coverage.
  6. Compare all your options. See all Medicare Supplement plans for 2027.

Plan G Rate Increases 2027 — Frequently Asked Questions

➤ How much will Plan G go up in 2027?

It depends on your company, state and age. Each insurer files its own increases. For context, Plan G rate increases averaged 16.8% across the industry in 2026, according to Telos Actuarial, though individual increases ranged well above and below that.

➤ Why is my Plan G premium going up?

Rising medical costs and claims are the main reason. If your policy is attained-age rated, your premium also rises as you get older. Plan G also became the main plan for new enrollees after Plan F closed in 2020, and maturing blocks of business tend to see larger increases.

➤ Can I switch Medigap companies to avoid a rate increase?

Yes, you can apply with another company for the same Plan G at a lower price. Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue right, most states let companies ask health questions, so approval isn’t guaranteed. Some states have yearly switching rules that waive health questions.

➤ Will my Plan G benefits change if my premium goes up?

No. Plan G benefits are standardized by federal law and don’t change when your premium rises. Only the price changes.

➤ What is the difference between attained-age and issue-age pricing?

Attained-age premiums rise as you get older, on top of yearly increases. Issue-age premiums are based on your age when you bought the policy and don’t rise because of age. Community-rated premiums are the same for everyone regardless of age. All three can still rise with costs.

➤ Is Plan N a good option if Plan G gets too expensive?

It can be. Plan N usually costs less than Plan G in exchange for copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits, and it doesn’t cover Part B excess charges. Switching may require health questions.

➤ When do Plan G rate increases take effect?

Many companies raise rates on your policy anniversary or at a set time each year, and they notify you in advance. Check your rate change letter for the exact date and amount.

➤ Do all states allow big Plan G rate increases?

Insurers must file rate increases with each state’s insurance department, and states review them. That’s why increases vary so much from one state to another, even for the same company.
