How High Deductible Plan G Works

  1. You pay first. Medicare-covered costs, Part A and Part B, come out of your pocket until you reach the yearly deductible.
  2. Then it pays in full. Once you hit the deductible, the plan pays 100% of Medicare-approved costs for the rest of the calendar year.
  3. It resets every January 1. The deductible starts over each calendar year.

Everything you pay for Medicare-covered care counts toward the deductible, including the Part A and Part B deductibles and coinsurance. Drug costs don’t count, because Medigap doesn’t cover prescriptions.

Is High Deductible Plan G Worth It?

The quick test: add up a year of premium savings versus regular Plan G. If the savings come close to the difference between the two deductibles, about $2,767 using the $3,050 deductible for 2027 and the 2026 Part B deductible, High Deductible Plan G usually wins in a normal year and costs you little extra in a bad one.

A good fit if you:

  • Are healthy and rarely see the doctor
  • Want protection from a big hospital bill
  • Can set aside the deductible if you need it

Look at regular Plan G or Plan N if you:

  • See specialists or have ongoing treatment
  • Want predictable costs with no large bills
  • Would struggle to pay $3,050 in a single year

Before You Enroll: 2027 Checklist

  1. Check that it’s sold in your state. Not every company offers High Deductible Plan G everywhere.
  2. Run the premium math. Compare a year of savings with the extra deductible.
  3. Check your timing. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period gives you guaranteed acceptance.
  4. Compare across carriers. Benefits are identical, so price is the difference.
  5. Ask about the pricing method. Attained-age, issue-age and community-rated policies age very differently.
  6. Add a Part D plan. Compare all Medicare Supplement plans for 2027 alongside your drug coverage.
