Medicare Supplement Plan F 2027: Who Can Still Get It and What It Costs

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 14, 2026

Medicare Supplement Plan F was the most popular Medigap plan for years because it covered everything Original Medicare didn’t. Since January 1, 2020, though, it hasn’t been available to people new to Medicare. If you were eligible before then, you can still buy it or keep it in 2027.

Here’s who can still get Plan F, what it covers, how it compares to Plan G, and whether it’s still worth the price.

Plan F 2027 at a Glance

Medicare Supplement Plan F 2027 overview: who can buy it, what it covers and the High Deductible Plan F amount

Who can buy Plan F in 2027: only people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you turned 65 on or after that date, Plan F isn’t available to you. Plan G is the closest match.

Federal law (MACRA) stopped Medigap plans from covering the Part B deductible for people newly eligible for Medicare starting in 2020. That closed Plan F, High Deductible Plan F and Plan C to new enrollees. Anyone who already has Plan F can keep it for life as long as they pay the premium.

What Plan F Covers in 2027

Benefit Plan F pays
Part A hospital coinsurance and costs up to 365 extra days 100%
Part A deductible ($1,736 in 2026) 100%
Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) 100%
Part B coinsurance and copays 100%
Part B excess charges 100%
Skilled nursing facility coinsurance 100%
Hospice care coinsurance 100%
First 3 pints of blood 100%
Foreign travel emergency 80% up to plan limits

2027 Medicare deductibles have not been announced yet. 2026 amounts shown.

With Plan F, you pay your monthly premium and that’s it for Medicare-approved care. There are no deductibles, copays or coinsurance, and you can see any doctor in the U.S. who accepts Medicare.

Plan F vs Plan G in 2027

Medicare Supplement Plan F vs Plan G 2027 comparison of coverage, premiums and switching

The only benefit difference between Plan F and Plan G is the Part B deductible. Plan F pays it and Plan G doesn’t. Every other benefit is identical.

That makes the math simple. If your Plan F premium costs more per year than Plan G plus the Part B deductible, Plan G is the better deal. In most areas it is, often by a wide margin.

There’s a second reason many Plan F owners look at Plan G: Plan F is a closed pool. No new, younger enrollees are joining, so the group gets older and claims rise. That can push Plan F rates up faster over time. Read more about Plan G rate increases in 2027.

High Deductible Plan F 2027

High Deductible Plan F covers the same benefits as Plan F, but only after you meet a yearly deductible. For 2027, that deductible is $3,050, up from $2,950 in 2026. Premiums are much lower than regular Plan F.

Like regular Plan F, it’s only available to people eligible for Medicare before 2020. Everyone else can get the same structure with High Deductible Plan G.

Should You Keep Plan F or Switch?

Keeping Plan F may make sense if:

  • Your Plan F premium is close to Plan G’s plus the Part B deductible
  • You have health conditions that could make it hard to pass a new carrier’s health questions
  • You value having no bills at all for Medicare-approved care

Switching to Plan G may make sense if:

  • Plan G saves you more per year than the Part B deductible
  • Your Plan F rate has jumped in recent years
  • You’re in good health and can pass underwriting, or you live in a state with a birthday or anniversary rule

Don’t cancel Plan F until your new plan is approved and active. See how the plans line up in the Medicare Supplement plans comparison chart 2027, and learn when you have guaranteed acceptance in our Medigap Open Enrollment Period 2027 guide.

Medicare Supplement Plan F FAQs

➤ Can I still buy Medicare Supplement Plan F in 2027?

Only if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. If you turned 65 or first became eligible for Medicare on or after that date, you can’t buy Plan F. Plan G is the closest option.

➤ What does Plan F cover?

Plan F pays your share of Medicare-approved costs, including the Part A deductible, the Part B deductible, Part B coinsurance, Part B excess charges, skilled nursing coinsurance, the first 3 pints of blood, and 80% of foreign travel emergency care up to plan limits.

➤ What is the difference between Plan F and Plan G?

The only benefit difference is the Part B deductible. Plan F pays it and Plan G doesn’t. Everything else is the same.

➤ Is Plan F worth it compared to Plan G?

Often not. Plan F premiums are frequently higher than Plan G by more than the Part B deductible, and because Plan F is closed to new enrollees, its rates can rise faster over time. Compare both quotes in your ZIP code.

➤ What is the High Deductible Plan F deductible for 2027?

The 2027 High Deductible Plan F deductible is $3,050, up from $2,950 in 2026. After you meet it, the plan pays like regular Plan F for the rest of the year.

➤ Will Plan F go away?

No. If you already have Plan F, you can keep it as long as you pay your premium. It just isn’t sold to people newly eligible for Medicare after 2019.

➤ Can I switch from Plan F to Plan G?

Yes, but outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or a guaranteed issue right, most carriers can ask health questions. Some states have birthday or anniversary rules that make switching easier.

➤ Does Plan F cover prescription drugs?

No. Medigap plans sold today don’t cover prescription drugs. Pair Plan F with a stand-alone Part D drug plan.

New to Medicare?

If you are new to Medicare, then you can enroll in a 2027 Medicare Supplement plan up to six months prior to your Medicare Part B effective date.
