Allstate Medicare Supplement Plans 2027: Market Exit, Underwriters and Your Options

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 31, 2026

Allstate no longer sells new Medicare Supplement plans: in May 2025 its Allstate Health Solutions unit (formerly National General) switched to paper-only applications and began withdrawing from the market state by state. Existing policies, issued mainly by National Health Insurance Company (rated A, Excellent, by AM Best), stay in force as long as you pay the premium.

Many guides still describe Allstate as a fresh Medicare Supplement option with a household discount and an A+ rating. That picture is out of date. In 2025 Allstate sold two of its health businesses, kept a smaller individual health unit, and told agents it was leaving the Medicare Supplement market.

If you already own an Allstate or National General policy, your coverage has not changed. This page explains what did change, which company actually backs your policy, what drives your Plan G premium from here, and how to compare it with an open carrier. How Allstate Went From Buyer to Seller in Health Insurance

Allstate Medicare Supplement timeline from the National General purchase to the 2025 market exit

Allstate entered Medicare Supplement by buying National General Holdings, a deal announced in 2020 and closed in early 2021. National General’s accident and health arm was later renamed Allstate Health Solutions. Four years later, Allstate reversed course and sold off most of its health and benefits side.

Date What happened Source
Early 2021 Allstate completes its purchase of National General Allstate
April 1, 2025 Employer voluntary benefits business, largely American Heritage Life Insurance Company, sold to The Standard The Standard
May 2025 Agents told: new Medicare Supplement applications on paper only, advance commissions suspended, state withdrawal notices to follow Agency notices
July 1, 2025 Group health business sold to Nationwide for about $1.23 billion Allstate SEC filing
Late 2025 Allstate reports the individual health business as “retained” Allstate 10-Q

Exact withdrawal dates differ by state because each state sets its own notice period.

What this means: Allstate did not sell its Medicare Supplement block. It kept the policies and stopped adding new members, which turns them into a closed block.

Which Company Is Actually on Your Allstate Policy?

The Allstate name is the brand, not the insurer. Allstate Health Solutions lists three underwriting companies for its health products: National Health Insurance Company (Dallas, Texas), Integon National Insurance Company and Integon Indemnity Corporation. Carrier review sites name National Health Insurance Company as the Medicare Supplement issuer, and some also list American Heritage Life Insurance Company.

Item National Health Insurance Company American Heritage Life Insurance Company
Owner today Allstate (retained) The Standard, since April 1, 2025
AM Best rating A (Excellent), affirmed with the Allstate group Reported as A (Excellent) after a May 2025 downgrade from A+
NAIC company code 82538 Check your policy
Role in Medicare Supplement Main issuer of Allstate and National General policies Listed by some review sites as a second issuer

Built from AM Best releases, Allstate’s plans page, The Standard’s closing release and carrier listings. Your policy’s first page names the issuer.

One detail most reviews miss: the A+ (Superior) grade often quoted for Allstate belongs to the Allstate Insurance Group, the car and home companies. The company that issues the Medicare Supplement policy, National Health Insurance Company, carries an A (Excellent) rating, one step lower but still strong.

Plan Letters and Discounts Allstate Sold Before the Exit

Allstate and National General focused on the plans most people buy. Agent listings show Plans A, F, G and N, plus high-deductible versions, with some states offering more letters. Plan F was only open to people eligible for Medicare before 2020.

Plan G owners. You pay the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026, projected $292 in 2027), then nothing for covered care. Benefits match Plan G from any carrier.

High-deductible Plan G owners. You pay covered costs up to $3,050 in 2027 before the plan starts paying.

Plan N owners. You pay the Part B deductible, up to $20 at some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits that don’t lead to admission.

Household discount. Reviews describe a 7% roommate discount and up to 10% when two people applied, with state rules. Your renewal notice shows what you still receive.

What Drives Allstate Plan G Cost From Here

Keeping an Allstate Medicare Supplement policy compared with switching to an open carrier

People often search for an Allstate Plan G cost. We don’t publish one, because Allstate is no longer quoting new buyers and existing premiums depend on your state, ZIP code, age, sex, tobacco use and the date you bought.

1

Closed block pressure. With no new, healthier members joining, the group ages and claims per person tend to rise. Closed blocks can see larger increases than open ones, though this is not certain.

2

Pricing method. If your policy is attained-age rated, the price also rises as you get older. Your policy schedule says which method applies.

3

State filings. Rate increases must be filed with your state insurance department. Many states let you read those filings online, using your policy form number.

4

Discounts on renewal. Check that a household discount still shows on each bill. If a spouse drops the policy, the discount may change.

Benchmark: Compare your bill to an open carrier’s Plan G quote each fall. See our Plan G rate increases for 2027 guide for what typical increases look like.

Keep Your Allstate Plan or Move to Another Carrier?

Allstate cannot cancel you because it left the market. Medicare Supplement policies are guaranteed renewable. That also means the exit usually does not, by itself, give you a federal guaranteed-issue right to switch, because your coverage is not ending.

Keeping makes sense when… Your premium is close to open-market quotes, or health conditions could make new underwriting hard.

Shopping makes sense when… Your renewal jumps and you can likely pass another carrier’s health questions.

State switching rules. California and Oregon have yearly birthday rules, and a few states have broader rights. See our guaranteed-issue Medicare Supplement guide.

If Plan G premiums keep climbing, Plan N is a lower-cost step down. Our Plan G vs Plan N 2027 comparison shows the trade-offs.

A Safe Switching Checklist for Allstate Policyholders

1

Pull your paperwork. Find the issuing company, plan letter, policy form number and current monthly premium.

2

Quote the same letter. Get Plan G or Plan N prices from at least two open carriers, with their household discounts.

3

Apply before you cancel. Answer the new carrier’s health questions honestly and wait for written approval.

4

Use the free look. You get 30 days to review a new Medicare Supplement policy. Pay both premiums for that one month.

5

Cancel Allstate in writing. Once the new policy is in force, send a written cancellation so you aren’t billed again.

Budget reminder: Your Part B premium is $202.90 a month in 2026 and projected at $209.50 in 2027, on top of any Medicare Supplement premium. More on timing in can you change Medicare Supplement plans.

Bottom Line

Allstate stopped selling new Medicare Supplement plans in 2025 but kept its existing policies, which are issued mainly by National Health Insurance Company with an A (Excellent) AM Best rating. Your benefits are safe, but a closed block can bring larger price increases. Compare your renewal with open carriers every fall and only switch after a new policy is approved.

Allstate Medicare Supplement — Frequently Asked Questions

➤ Can I still buy an Allstate Medicare Supplement plan in 2027?

Not in practice. In May 2025 Allstate moved to paper-only applications and began filing state withdrawal notices, and its plans page no longer lists Medicare Supplement. New buyers should compare open carriers.

➤ Is Allstate Health Solutions the same as National General?

Yes. Allstate bought National General in a deal that closed in early 2021, and National General’s accident and health business now operates as Allstate Health Solutions.

➤ Did Allstate sell its Medicare Supplement policies to another company?

No buyer has been announced. Allstate sold its employer voluntary benefits business to The Standard and its group health business to Nationwide in 2025, and said it retained the individual health business.

➤ What is the AM Best rating of Allstate’s Medicare Supplement underwriter?

National Health Insurance Company is rated A (Excellent) by AM Best. The A+ often quoted applies to Allstate’s property and casualty companies, not this insurer.

➤ How much does Allstate Plan G cost?

There is no single price. Existing premiums depend on your state, ZIP code, age, sex, tobacco use and when you bought, and Allstate is not quoting new applicants.

➤ Will my Allstate premium go up faster now?

It may. A closed block no longer adds new members, which can lead to larger increases, though this is not guaranteed. Any increase must be filed with your state.

➤ Does Allstate leaving the market give me a guaranteed-issue right?

Usually not under federal rules, because your policy keeps going. Some states, such as California and Oregon, have their own yearly switching windows.

➤ Do I keep my household discount on an Allstate policy?

Generally yes, if you still meet the rules from when you bought. Check each renewal notice, and ask how the discount changes if your spouse drops coverage.

New to Medicare?

If you are new to Medicare, then you can enroll in a 2027 Medicare Supplement plan up to six months prior to your Medicare Part B effective date.
