Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 29, 2026

Medicare Supplement plans in Indiana are sold by 36 insurance companies, and starting in 2026 Indiana lets current policyholders switch to the same plan letter at another company each year around their birthday with no health questions. Plan G is the clear favorite: about 61% of Indiana’s 374,468 Medicare Supplement enrollees had it at the end of 2025.

Indiana changed its Medicare Supplement laws three times in six years. A 2020 law opened Plan A to people under 65, a 2024 law gave younger enrollees a one-time chance to buy coverage in 2025, and a 2025 law created a yearly birthday switching window that began January 1, 2026. If you live in Indiana, those laws shape when you can buy, when you can switch and what you pay.

Plan letter Indiana enrollees Share

Indiana's Birthday Rule Began January 1, 2026

House Enrolled Act 1226, passed in 2025, gives Indiana policyholders age 65 and older a yearly switching window tied to their birthday. The Indiana State Health Insurance Assistance Program’s fact sheet explains how it works.

1

Already have a policy. The rule is only for people who already own a Medicare Supplement. It is not a way to buy your first policy without health questions.

2

Watch the two-month window. It runs from one month before your birthday to one month after it, every year.

3

Keep the same letter. You can move Plan G at one company to Plan G at another. Moving from High-Deductible Plan G to Plan G is also allowed.

4

Know what is not covered. Moving to a different letter, such as Plan F to Plan G, is not guaranteed under the rule.

5

Mark the start date. The new policy begins on the first day of the month after you sign the application. Sign on June 15 and coverage starts July 1.

Good to know: A 2026 follow-up law, HEA 1260, amended the rule for policies delivered, issued or renewed on or after March 15, 2026. Ask the insurer to confirm your window before you cancel anything.

Buying Before 65 on Indiana Medicare

Federal law does not require companies to sell Medicare Supplement plans to people under 65. Indiana does, through two laws.

Indiana law What it did Status for 2027
SEA 392 (“Tammy’s law”) Companies that sell to people 65+ must also offer Plan A to people under 65 In effect since July 1, 2020
SEA 215, one-time window People under 65 who were already on Medicare could join without being turned down, Jan. 1 to June 30, 2025 Closed
SEA 215, new enrollees Anyone newly eligible under 65 after Jan. 1, 2025 gets a six-month guaranteed window In effect
SEA 215, price limits Plans A, B and D cost the same as the age-65 rate; other plans, like Plan G, can cost up to 200% of it In effect

Broker tip: If you missed the 2025 window, your next guaranteed chance comes at 65, when your federal six-month open enrollment starts. See our open enrollment period guide.

How Indiana Approves Premiums

Medicare Supplement plans Indiana 2027: three pricing methods approved by the Indiana Department of Insurance and 36 insurers

The Indiana Department of Insurance must approve every Medicare Supplement premium rate before a company can use it, and it reviews increases using the company’s loss ratio, meaning how much of the premium is paid out in claims.

Issue-age pricing. Your rate is based on your age when you buy. It can still rise for inflation, but not because you got older.

Attained-age pricing. Your rate climbs as you age, on top of any group increase.

No age rating. Everyone in the area pays the same rate regardless of age.

Who sells here. The Department’s list of companies selling Medicare Supplement insurance in Indiana, revised Aug. 11, 2026, names 36 insurers.

Indiana does not print a premium chart. Its official comparison is the SHIP online tool, “Compare Medicare Supplement Policies,” which shows approved rates by ZIP code. Our page on Plan G rate increases for 2027 explains what drives yearly changes.

Choosing a Letter in Indiana for 2027

With the birthday rule now locking you into the same letter when you switch, the plan you pick first matters more in Indiana than it used to.

Plan What you pay in 2027 Fits Hoosiers who
Plan G Part B deductible, projected $292 Want almost no bills and the option to shop the same letter every birthday
Plan N Part B deductible plus copays up to $20 office / $50 ER Are healthy and want a lower premium
High-Deductible G First $3,050 of covered costs Have savings; the rule lets them move up to regular Plan G later

2027 deductible figures: Medicare Trustees projection and CMS. Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges.

Notice the last row. Because Indiana’s rule allows High-Deductible G to Plan G, starting on the cheaper version is less risky here than in states with no switching window. Compare the two on our Plan G vs Plan N page.

Free Counseling from Indiana SHIP

Indiana’s State Health Insurance Assistance Program, known as Indiana SHIP, is run with the Indiana Department of Insurance and federal Administration for Community Living funding. Its counselors are volunteers certified by the Department, and they help in person, by phone or online at no cost.

1

Pull your current policy. Note your plan letter, company and premium so you can compare the same letter.

2

Check your birthday window. Count one month back and one month forward from your birthday.

3

Get quotes from several of the 36 insurers. A licensed agent can show many at once at no extra cost.

4

Apply, then cancel. Keep your old policy until the new one is approved and its start date is set.

Bottom Line

Indiana gives Medicare Supplement buyers more chances than most states: Plan A before 65, price limits for younger enrollees, and since 2026 a yearly birthday window to move the same plan letter to a cheaper company. Pick your letter carefully at 65, then use your birthday each year to check whether another company’s rate is lower.
