Medicare Part G 2027: What It Costs and What It Covers

Reviewed by Russell Noga, Licensed Medicare Insurance Broker (all 50 states) — Last updated October 12, 2026

Here’s the short answer: there is no Medicare Part G. Medicare has four parts, A, B, C and D. When people search for Medicare Part G, they almost always mean Medicare Supplement Plan G, the most popular Medigap plan for people new to Medicare.

The mix-up is easy to make, because Medigap plans also use letters. This page covers what “Part G” really is, what it costs in 2027 and what it covers. For the full plan guide, see our Medicare Supplement Plan G 2027 page.

Medicare Part G vs Plan G explained: Medicare Parts A through D compared with Medigap Plan G

Medicare Part G vs Plan G: Parts and Plans Explained

Medicare uses letters in two different ways. The Parts are the pieces of Medicare itself. The Plans are Medigap policies you buy from a private insurance company to fill the gaps in Parts A and B.

Name What It Is
Part A Hospital insurance: inpatient stays, skilled nursing and hospice
Part B Medical insurance: doctor visits, outpatient care and tests
Part C Medicare Advantage, private plans that replace Parts A and B
Part D Prescription drug coverage
Plan G (“Part G”) A Medigap plan that works with Parts A and B and pays most of what they leave behind

What Medicare Part G Costs in 2027

With Plan G, your Medicare costs come down to three numbers:

  • The Plan G premium. Set by each insurance company. The national average was about $180 a month in 2026 for a 65-year-old woman who doesn’t smoke, according to ValuePenguin.
  • The Part B premium. You pay this to Medicare no matter which Medigap plan you choose. It was $202.90 a month in 2026.
  • The Part B deductible. Plan G’s only deductible, $283 in 2026. See our guide to the Medicare Plan G deductible for 2027.

Plan G rates rise over time. Plan G rate increases averaged 16.8% across the industry in 2026, according to Telos Actuarial, so the company you choose matters as much as the starting price. See our full breakdown of Medicare Supplement Plan G cost in 2027.

What Medicare Part G Covers

After the Part B deductible, Plan G pays your Medicare-approved costs in full. That includes:

  • The Part A hospital deductible, $1,736 per benefit period in 2026.
  • Part A and Part B coinsurance, including the 20% Original Medicare leaves for doctor visits.
  • Part B excess charges from doctors who don’t accept Medicare assignment.
  • Skilled nursing, hospice and blood coinsurance.
  • Foreign travel emergencies at 80%, after a $250 deductible, up to plan limits.

Plan G doesn’t include prescription drug coverage, so you’ll need a separate Part D plan. It also works with any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, with no networks or referrals.

Who Can Get Medicare Part G

The best time to buy is your Medigap Open Enrollment Period, the six months starting the month you’re 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, insurance companies can’t deny you coverage or charge you more because of your health. Outside it, most states let them ask health questions.

You need to be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and Part B to buy Plan G. If you’re under 65 and on Medicare because of a disability, availability depends on your state. Plan G doesn’t work with Medicare Advantage, so you choose one or the other.

Before You Enroll: 2027 Checklist

  1. Confirm you have Parts A and B. Plan G works alongside them.
  2. Check your timing. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period gives you guaranteed acceptance.
  3. Compare Plan G across carriers. Benefits are identical, so price is the difference.
  4. Ask about the pricing method. Attained-age, issue-age and community-rated policies age very differently.
  5. Consider Plan N. It may cost less if you’re fine with small copays.
  6. Add a Part D plan. Compare all Medicare Supplement plans for 2027 alongside your drug coverage.
